You will be knowledgable communicators while interacting with this unit. You will be able to explain how ideas are communicated differently to readers through different genres and you will be expected to confidently communicate your own ideas and perceptions of the novel through the use of creative journalism.
In addition, you will be using a variety of sources in order to better understand the historical and cultural significance of the events that take place in the novel. You will be knowledgable in explaining the causes and impact of these events on multiple communities.

Students will be able to:
Identify allusions and explain the significance and impact the allusions have on the story.
Analyze point of view and how it affects the overall telling of the story and the perspective of the events in the story.
Cite evidence from the text in order to defend a generalization or an argument.
Critique the structure of the novel and the genre chosen to tell the story.
Determine the cause and effect of events in the novel using inferences from the text combined with understanding of historical context.
Identify major themes in the story and use textual support to identify the message behind the themes.
